About FuelTripCost

FuelTripCost is a free set of calculators and guides for understanding fuel use and the fuel-related cost of driving.

Why the site exists

A driving estimate becomes confusing when distance, gallon type, fuel economy, price, and trip scope do not match. FuelTripCost keeps those assumptions visible so a visitor can calculate a commute, errand, shared drive, or road trip without a hidden route, price, or exchange-rate assumption.

What the tools calculate

• Fuel cost and fuel required for one-way and return trips.
• Road-trip totals with user-entered tolls, parking, other costs, and an equal passenger split.
• Measured US MPG from a full-tank interval.
• Fuel-economy conversions among US MPG, Imperial MPG, L/100 km, and km/L.
• Two-vehicle fuel comparisons using one shared trip and price.

How accuracy is approached

The arithmetic uses explicit formulas and fixed unit constants. Calculation functions are covered by automated tests for US, UK, and metric conversions, round trips, passenger splitting, fees, invalid values, and extreme inputs. Intermediate values are retained at full precision and results are rounded only for display.

Accuracy still depends on the inputs. A measured economy figure from similar driving can be more representative than an unrelated rating, and a route distance should include every leg and expected detour.

Data the site uses

Distance, fuel economy, fuel price, passenger count, and fees are supplied by the visitor. Calculations run in the browser and do not require an account. FuelTripCost does not currently retrieve routes, traffic, station prices, vehicle records, toll databases, exchange rates, or weather.

Limits and transparency

Real consumption changes with traffic, weather, terrain, load, tire pressure, towing, idling, vehicle condition, and driving style. Results are planning estimates, and fuel-only rates do not represent total vehicle ownership cost. The methodology page publishes formulas, conversions, rounding rules, and assumptions; the estimate disclaimer explains how results should be used.
